8th International Workshop on Lean Satellite – January 2026

A “Lean Satellite” is a satellite that utilizes non-traditional, risk-taking development and management approaches – with the aim to provide the values of satellites to the stakeholders at low-cost and in short time to realize the satellite mission. These approaches differ significantly from traditional approaches to satellite development. The term “Lean Satellite” emerged during international standardization activities related to the testing of small, micro, nano, and pico satellites, which began in 2011. At that time, there was no universally accepted definition of these satellite categories. To better reflect the underlying development and management philosophy—rather than focusing solely on physical classification—the term “Lean Satellite” was adopted in 2014.

Since 2011, an international workshop has been held annually to discuss various aspects of “Lean Satellites.” The 8th workshop, scheduled for January 2026, aims to further advance the study and application of lean satellite concepts. To deliver satellite value to stakeholders at an affordable cost and within an acceptable timeframe, a number of key issues requires further exploration—such as standardization, testing, operations, manufacturing, interfaces, and project management.

This workshop intends to serve as an open forum for people interested in making and using satellites differently from the traditional ways. Business meeting sessions that connect overseas participants and Japanese companies will be also organized as a part of the workshop. The workshop will be made of the following sessions,
